Introducing ASPETE \ Academic Structure

ASPETE's ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS

ASPETE comprises the following Academic Departments:

  • Department of Electrical Engineering Educators
  • Department of Electronic Engineering Educators
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering Educators
  • Department of Civil and Structural Engineering Educators
  • Department of Civil and Construction Engineering Educators
  • General Department of Education
  • General Department of General Courses

ASPETE's five Technological Departments provide concurrent technological and pedagogical education, and promote applied research. The degree issued by these Departments qualifies its holders to teach in the corresponding secondary education discipline(s).
ASPETE's General Departments provide pedagogical and general education subjects which are integrated in the curriculum of the School's Technological Departments; they operate in accordance with the provisions of para. 3, article 5 of Law 1404/1983 and do not issue degrees.

ORGANIZATION OF STUDIES

Admission
Admission to the Technological Departments of ASPETE is possible through the procedures specified by the system regulating entrance to tertiary education in Greece, which entails national examinations held in the last year of Lyceum.

Degree Programme Content & Structure
The content of the degree programme integrates theory and practice in both aspects of the School's twofold orientation, i.e. the pedagogical and the technological. The programme is delivered through a variety of teaching methods including formal lectures, laboratory and workshop tutorials, fieldwork and projects. The balance between theory and practice is further enhanced by various extra-curricular activities ranging from special topic seminars and panel discussions to educational visits and trips.

Assessment
Each subject is assessed separately by means of assignments and mid-term exams (progress-tests), as well as formal examinations at the end of each semester. A grading scale from 0 to 10 is used, with 5 being the lowest passing grade. A student with a failing final grade in a subject is entitled to resit the second examination period of the corresponding semester.

Degree Award
The degree is awarded following the completion of a course of study of eight academic semesters, including the submission of a thesis, the successful completion of teaching practice sessions, and a six-month practical work experience in the field.

Student Care & Services
ASPETE's students are entitled to:

  • Free textbooks and other teaching material.
  • Scholarships (distinguished students with low family income).
  • Accommodation at the Students' Residence Hall of ASPETE (students with low family income).
  • Loans under provisions
  • Free medical care

ASPETE's students receive:

  • A Pass Card for reduced fares (valid for 1 year and renewable annually).
  • Meal coupons for use at the School's Restaurant (students with low family income).

THE PEDAGOGICAL TRAINING PROGRAMME

No degree programme is offered by the General Departments of ASPETE. The General Department of Education, however, delivers a pedagogical training programme of a one-year duration, leading to the award of a "Certificate of Pedagogical and Teaching Competence". The programme is tailored to meet the needs of prospective teachers with degrees from a wide range of higher education tech/voc disciplines and specializations.

Admission to the pedagogical training programme is made by means of a selection process of individual candidates, which is based on strictly pre-set criteria. These criteria include the degree grade, other degrees apart from the one submitted for consideration, possible postgraduate degrees, certified knowledge of foreign languages, and documented professional and teaching experience.

The programme integrates theoretical instruction and laboratory work, is supplemented by the Teaching Practice Sessions, and is supported by a variety of extra-curricular on-campus and off-campus activities.

PROGRAMMES OF FURTHER TRAINING OR SPECIALIZATION

These are programmes of a duration of up to two-semesters and are intended for qualified or prospective teachers. Those that have successfully completed the programmes, are awarded a "Certificate of Further Training" or "Specialization Training", accordingly.
